Carmella M. Abbate
Carmella M. Abbate (Santoro), passed into God’s hands surrounded by her loving family. She was a longtime resident of Mamaroneck born to Louis and Mary DeCarlo Santoro, October 27, 1919. She attended Mamaroneck Schools but her education was abruptly cut short when her mom took sick and dad passed. She left school in the 6th grade to help care for her eight loving siblings without a complaint in her heart. Carmella was married to the late Frank Abbate, March of 1945. She is survived by her two daughters, Francine DeMarco (the late Richard) and Maryellen Milazzo (Michael) and also Frankie the cat. She leaves behind her dedicated grandsons who never left her bedside, Jonathan “Jonboy” as she’d call him, Gregory and Matthew. The sunshine of her life were her 5 great grandchildren, Mia, Richie, Dylan, Cameron and Kacey DeMarco. She is also survived by her siblings, Thomas Santoro (Kaye), Ernest Santoro, Margaret Lucia and Joseph Santoro. Predeceased by her siblings, Ginger Pugliese, Larry Santoro, Michael Santoro and Louis Santoro Jr., and her loving son-in-law, Richard DeMarco who was a son to her. Carmella did work for a short time at her dear friend Sandy Longhi’s Mamaroneck Women’s Clothing Store. When Mamaroneck celebrated its Bicentennial she not only marched dressed as an Indian in the parade with Sandi’s staff but she also sewed each individual costume. Carmella was an avid baker just up until several years ago when stricken with failing eye sight. Her love was taken from her but she still memorized her biscotti recipe and baked them assisted by her then aide. Her greatest joy was to cook for her grandson’s fraternity which she did on many occasions and always kept a batch of frozen meatballs and gravy in her freezer for a surprise visit. She would put a meal together in a moment’s notice. We celebrate you, Mom. You were a true inspiration to each of us. Your love, dedication, wisdom, tenderness and compassion have joyfully touched many lives, a true gift we shall forever cherish along with all who love you so deeply. We shall all treasure our precious memories and endless laughter we shared. She lived her life for her family to the fullest. To honor Carmella’s life family and friends will gather Friday 2-4 & 7-9pm at COXE & GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME 767 E. Boston Post Rd. Mamaroneck. 914-698-5968. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday 10am St. Vito’s RC Church followed by interment at Greenwood Union Cemetery.
